カルロス・ベガ（Carlos Vega, 1898-1966）は、アルゼンチンをはじめとする南米各地に伝わる民謡や舞踊の収集・体系化という先駆的な仕事を成したことで知られ、「アルゼンチン音楽学の開祖」と称されるとともに、近代科学としての民俗学の理論・方法論の立役者ともなった人物である。ベガの民謡・舞踊研究は、アルゼンチンおよびラテンアメリカ諸国の音楽学者・民俗学者らに多大な影響を及ぼしたばかりでなく、アルゼンチンの一般の人々の間にも流布して、通念としての「アルゼンチン文化」像の構築というべき働きをも成したと言える。
ベガは、ナショナリズム的偏見によって「事実」を歪曲することを忌避し、科学的客観性を重視するという立場から、自らの著述においてはあくまで「非政治的」であろうとする（ナショナリズム的意図を抑制する）傾向を有していた。しかしながら、彼によって「アルゼンチン文化」として提示された民謡や舞踊も、やはりある種の基準のもとで取捨選択されたものに相違なかった。その取捨選択の基準になったものとは、逆説的ながら、彼が科学的客観性の拠所として提唱していた民俗学理論であった。
19世紀末のフランス社会学（ガブリエル・タルド等）や、20世紀初期ドイツ語圏の比較音楽学（エーリッヒ・フォン・ホルンボステル、クルト・ザックス等）の諸学説から着想を得て、独自の理論・方法論を提唱したベガは、その理論・方法論に忠実であろうとしたがゆえに、自らの研究対象として取り上げる事象の範囲に限界を設けざるを得なかった。すなわち、例えば一部の先住民文化やアフロ系集団の文化については、方法論上の制約により分析不能であるという理由で、研究対象から意図的に除外したのである。他方、従来のナショナリズム言説のなかでは「土着的なるもの」としての認知を得てこなかったタンゴのような都市文化は、ベガにとっては理論上の関心を惹くものであったがゆえ、分析対象の一つとして積極的に取り上げられることとなった。
本発表では、ベガが依拠していた理論・方法論の特徴を概観しつつ、彼によって描き出された「アルゼンチン文化」の全体像を明らかにし、それが従来のナショナリズム言説において描かれてきたものと比していかに異質なものであったかを浮き彫りにする。また、ベガによって体系化された民謡・舞踊が、学者および一般の愛好家の人々の間でどのように受容されてきたかという側面にも着目して、それらが「アルゼンチン文化」の表象として認知されるに至った経緯についても、できる限り詳らかに考察したい。
