かつてニューミュージックという言葉が、日本のポピュラー音楽をさす言葉として大きく取り上げられた時代があった。日本のポピュラー音楽シーンにおいて大きな転機を迎えたのは、60年代後半から70年代初頭で、プロの音楽家やプロの歌手が作り出す、いわゆる流行歌が主流だった時代から、自作自演のシンガーソングライターが登場してくる頃である。シンガーソングライターは、自分の言葉やメロディー、アーチスト性を遺憾なく発揮し、革新的な楽曲を世に送り出してきた。この変化はシンガーソングライターというアーチストだけの問題ではなく、それを支持する若者を中心としたリスナー、それをプロデュースしたレコード会社、ラジオやテレビなどのマスメディアなどの音楽を取り巻く環境（時代性）が大きく影響していたとも考えられる。その後、70年代の後半から80年代の初頭にかけて、これまでの枠には収まらないアーチストが次々とデビューし、その大きなうねりはニューミュージックという言葉で表されるようになっていった。
本発表では、初めに、「ニューミュージック」という言葉がいつごろから使われ始めたのかを探る。これには諸説あるが、「ニュー」とはどんな音楽に対して「ニュー」なのか、また、当時の人々は何処に「ニュー」と感じたのかを考察することにより、ニューミュージックとはどんな音楽であったのかを再考する。90年代以降「ニューミュージック」という言葉はあまり使われなくなったが、なぜ使われなくなったのか、その後のＪ－ＰＯＰとの関連から考察を行う。
最後に、ニューミュージックが登場する以前の世代、ニューミュージックの時代を通過してきた世代と、その後のＪ－ＰＯＰしか知らない世代にインタビューを試み、世代による認識の違いなどの分析を踏まえ、そもそもニューミュージックとは何だったのかその本質に迫ってみる。
